PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plate thickness measuring method using an impulse hammer by which the thickness of a plate can be measured more easily and efficiently. SOLUTION: In the plate thickness measuring method, the striking load F applied to a steel plate 1 with the impulse hammer 5 is measured by means of a load cell 11 provided in the hammer section 10 of the hammer 5. In addition, an accelerometer 13 attached to the hammer 5 detects the approaching speed (hammer speed) V of the hammer 5 to the steel plate 1. Then thickness of the steel plate 1 is found based on a restitution coefficient e when the steel plate 1 is struck with the hammer 5 by correlating the striking load F and hammer speed V with the restitution coefficient e. When this plate thickness measuring method is applied to the inspection of a gigantic object like a hull having many points of measurement, the required time, labor, and cost can be reduced, because the thickness of the steel plate 1 can be measured with high accuracy by only removing rust from the surface of the plate 1.
