PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hexaaluminate porous ceramic that is excellent in shaped article strength without using an additive such as an organic binder and the like is capable of broadly controlling the porosity after the calcination without using an additive such as an inflammable pore forming agent and of which the load to environment is small and the manufacturing step is convenient and low cost, and to provide a manufacturing method thereof. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of hexaaluminate porous ceramic is characterized by kneading a mixed powder comprising a hydraulic alumina powder and a carbonate powder of an alkaline earth element, or a mixed powder comprising a hydraulic alumina powder and an aluminum oxide powder and/or an aluminum oxide hydrate powder and a carbonate powder of an alkaline earth element with water, shaping, drying and calcining the same to produce the porous ceramic having 5% or more of open porosity. Also, the hexaaluminate porous ceramic is manufactured by the process and the open porosity is controlled to the predetermined range of 5% or more by the amount of water to be added.
