PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having a low limit temperature for nematic phase, a positive permittivity anisotropy, an adequate optical permittivity, a high voltage holding ratio and a short response time. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal contains at least one of the compounds (1-1) and (1-2) and at least one of the compounds (2-1), (2-2) and (2-3). Wherein, R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>7</SP>are each an alkyl, an alkoxy, an alkenyl or alkoxymethyl group; A<SP>1</SP>to A<SP>7</SP>are each a 1, 4-cyclohexylene or a 1,4-phenylene of which hydrogen is optionally not replaced or replaced with fluorine; Z<SP>1</SP>is a single bond, -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>2</SB>, -CH=CH-, or -COO-; Z<SP>2</SP>, Z<SP>3</SP>and Z<SP>4</SP>are each a single bond or -(CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>2</SB>; X<SP>1</SP>is fluorine, chlorine, -CF<SB>3</SB>, -OCF<SB>3</SB>or -OCF<SB>2</SB>H; Y<SP>1</SP>, Y<SP>2</SP>, Y<SP>3</SP>, Y<SP>4</SP>and Y<SP>5</SP>are each hydrogen or fluorine; m is 0, 1 or 2; and n is 0 or 1.
