A hot oil management system for an IC engine has a dry sump engine with the oil drained into a thermally insulated reservoir. During start up the oil is pumped from the hot reservoir to specific lubrication sites, e.g. engine bearings, valve gear etc. in order to minimise cold starting wear. The insulated reservoir has an integral second chamber to store fresh oil. This doubles as a thermal store as well as a source for automatic top up of the lubricant circuit. When the oil has reached a set temperature, during engine operation, excess heat is removed by an oil cooler in parallel to the hot oil reservoir.
