PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate an image processing part at an approximately optimal processing speed at all times without being affected by various variable factors. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with: a clock signal generating part 30 which is capable of varying an oscillation frequency; an image processing part 32 which compresses image data, expands the compressed image data and operates based upon a clock signal outputted from the clock signal generating part 30; a comparatively discrimination part 202 for comparatively discriminating an image quality of image data before compression in the image processing part 32 and that of image data resulting from expanding the compressed image data; and a frequency switching control part 201 for successively switching the oscillation frequency of the clock signal generating part 30 and setting the oscillation frequency based on the compared result resulting from the comparative discrimination part 202 as an operating frequency of the image processing part 32.
