PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition that satisfies more than one characteristics out of the general properties, a wide temperature range of nematic phase, particularly the lowest temperature limit, a low threshold voltage for a low power consumption and a high voltage holding ratio to realize a high contrast ratio. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains at least one compound selected from the group of compound expressed by formulas (1)-(5). In the formulas R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently an alkyl, an alkoxy, an alkenyl or alkoxymethyl group; X<SP>1</SP>and X<SP>2</SP>are each independently fluorine, chlorine, -CF<SB>3</SB>, -OCF<SB>3</SB>or -OCF<SB>2</SB>H; Y<SP>1</SP>is hydrogen or fluorine; k is 1 or 2; m is 1 or 2; and n is 0 or 1.
