The belt tensioning drive comprises balls (36) accommodated in a housing section (32) and driven out of the housing by a drive means. A wheel (20) is encompassed by an annular channel which, apart from an inlet channel (16) which is in communication with the housing section, is closed. A flap (38) is installed between the inlet channel and annular channel. The wheel is provided with a stop wall (26). The wheel is made of elastic material and has an undercut slot for the balls.
