PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol of high purity by purifying 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol formed in the manufacturing method of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol comprising reacting 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-chloroethane with aγ-hydroxybutyric acid alkali metal salt in an aprotic polar solvent. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol of high purity comprises a step for adding water to 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, separated from a reaction liquid obtained by reacting 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-chloroethane with theγ-hydroxybutyric acid alkali metal salt in the aprotic polar solvent, to carry out distillation purification, a step for recovering, by washing with water, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol contained in a low-boiling component separated by distillation, and a step for feeding recovered 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol back to crude 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol.
