PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which minimizes the deviation of frame discrimination positions when a long-sized film is used. SOLUTION: A control part 4 of a host computer 2 constituting the image reader acquires an average value in the main scanning direction of the transmission densities of all lines of a film image, preserves them as array variables AveR, obtains an average value FilmAveR of all lines and a maximum value AveRMax from the array variables AveR, and further obtains a threshold ThR. Then the control parts 4 uses the threshold ThR to detect frame intervals on the basis of the array variables AveR and preserves them as an all frame interval list L. Next, the control part 4 performs neighborhood processing in accordance with the all frame interval list L, obtains erroneously detected frame intervals out of neighboring frame intervals and deletes them from the all frame interval list L. Further, the control part 4 performs serial processing to obtain erroneously detected frame intervals missed in the neighborhood processing, and deletes the erroneously detected frame intervals from the all frame interval list L.
