PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a joint strength between an iron layer and a carbon layer when forming the iron layer on the surface of a carbon substrate to form a functionally gradient material. SOLUTION: Iron alloy powder whose main component is iron such as stainless steel, with such other metal as chromium contained, is put on the surface of the carbon substrate which is sintered to a prescribed shape in advance, which is sintered at about 1100°C for 1.5 hours. Thus, the functionally gradient material in which the joint strength between the iron alloy layer and the carbon layer is higher than the fracture strength of the carbon substrate is obtained.
