PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone exchange system capable of accommodating a number of trunks and improving the reliability and call connection throughput. SOLUTION: In the telephone exchange system provided with a plurality of communication terminal devices 8 and exchange devices 1A, 1B which connect the terminal devices through direct lines and perform exchange operations, each of the communication terminal devices 8 is provided with handsets 8-1-1, 8-1-2, a call switch 8-30 for connecting the handsets 8-1-1, 8-1-2 to the line to set a speech path, and a storage device 8-16 for storing status information relating to statuses of the exchange devices 1A, 1B, the statuses of the exchange devices 1A, 1B are stored in the storage device 8-16 and when a call originating operation or an incoming call response operation is performed, a control device 8-14 performs a call connecting operation based on the status information.
