A metal material, characterized in that it comprises a metal matrix and, dispersed therein, a low melting point alloy phase comprising Sn and at least one of Bi and Pb; and a method for producing the metal material. The low melting point alloy phase is preferably dispersed in the form of particles in a volume percentage of 0.35 to 10 % and in a particle number concentration of 10<4> pieces/mm<3> or more. The metal material, in particular when a copper alloy is used as the metal matrix, exhibits excellent capability of being machined independently of working conditions, can be machined while satisfying the regulatory standard for the elution of Pb (0.01 mg/l or less), and can be produced at an advantageous cost.
