New phenyl maleic anhydride and maleimide derivatives used for lowering blood pressure, increasing high-density lipoprotein or as central cholinergic agonists, hepatoprotective, antiinflammatory agents and antitumor agents

Phenyl maleic anhydride and maleimide derivatives (I) are new. Phenyl maleic anhydride and maleimide derivatives of formula (I), are new. [Image] X : N or O; R 11-10C alkoxy, 2-10C alkenyloxy or 2-10C alkynyloxy; R 2H, 1-10C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl or 2-10C alkynyl, and R 3H or OH or is absent when X is O. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a mixture produced by extracting Antrodia camphorata mycelium with an aqueous or organic solvent; (2) Antrodia camphorata mycelium containing (I). ACTIVITY : Hypotensive; Antilipemic; Hepatotropic; Antiinflammatory; Cytostatic. In a test, 3-isobutyl-4-(4-(3-methyl-2-butenyloxy)phenyl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione had an EC 50 value of 3.6 mu g/ml against Lewis lung carcinoma cells, compared with 0.14 mu g/ml for adriamycin. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Central cholinergic agonist.
