The method involves providing tires (4) with transponders for storing and transmitting tire-related data to an external transmission and reception unit (8). The data are transmitted to several transmission and reception units mounted near the wheels after mounting the tires on the wheels and the data are then transmitted from the transmission and reception units to a central unit (10) on the vehicle (2) for detecting and processing the data.
