PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To join hollow members from one side without paying too much attention to their dimensional accuracy and also to make a high-strength joint. SOLUTION: Friction stir welding is performed from above to the projected pieces 12b, 22b of the face plate of hollow members 10, 20. Then, a joining material 30 is placed on the face plates 11, 21 on the upper face of the hollow members 10, 20, with friction stir welding performed from above. The weld zone is at the intersection between a rib for connecting the two face plates 11, 12 (21, 22) and the face plate 11 (21). The joining material 30 and the face plates 11, 21 are joined by lap welding and not by butt welding.
