PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately detect physical quantities (such as fuel concentration, etc.) in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: An incident light side rod 11 and an emergent light side rod 12 are opposed to each other at an interval in the combustion chamber. On the basis of both a light quantity at transmission through a measuring part between them and a reference light quantity in a state not affected by in-cylinder gases of the measuring part (in a state of no light absorption), fuel concentration etc. are detected. A calibration gas and in-cylinder gass are selectively filled between end parts on the opposite side to the measuring part of the rods 11 and 12. An emergent light quantity at this time is measured. On the basis of these emergent light quantities, it is possible to highly precisely compute the reference light quantity without being affected by remaining HC etc. in the measuring part.
