PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the fall-out of a monolithic refractory with a vertical joint formed between adjacent stave coolers in the horizontal direction of the stave cooler. SOLUTION: The working metal for vertical joint of the stave cooler constituted of one pair of large and small channel steels overlapping the one side 1 on the other side 2 as a cover-state and springs 3 disposed between one pair of large and small channel steels 1 and 2, and acted so as to extend the bottom surfaces of both steels, is restricted with a restricting means so as to interpose into a gap between the adjacent stave coolers in the horizontal direction against the energized force of the spring 3. After the working metal is inserted into the gap between the adjacent stave coolers from an opening hole arranged in an iron shell of the furnace body, the restricting means is removed, and after bringing the bottom surfaces of one pair of channel steels 1 and 2 into contact with the side surfaces of the adjacent stave coolers with the energized force of the spring 3, the vertical joint is formed by spraying the refractory into the gap between the stave coolers.
