PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact high-performance zoom lens where the position of an exit pupil gets clear off from an imaging surface and which has a variable power ratio in the range of three times. SOLUTION: The zoom lens is equipped with a first lens group G1 having negative refractive power, a diaphragm and a second lens group G2 having positive refractive power, and a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power. If varying power from a wide angle end (W) to a telephoto end (T), the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 are respectively moved and the third lens group G3 is fixed so that space between the first and the second lens groups G1 and G2 is decreased and space between the second and the third lens groups G2 and G3 is increased. The second lens group G2 is constituted of four or less lens components and has a diffraction optical surface Gf as a lens surface which is not the surface nearest to an object side.
