<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize two-way shutdown of a wavelength multiplex transmission apparatus without using a control light. <P>SOLUTION: On the occurrence of a fault on a transmission path of an optical fiber 2, a terminal station 3 detects the interruption of input of all signal lights to shut down transmission. Only a signal light 5 with a particular wavelength is transmitted on the occurrence of shutdown. A terminal station 1 detects the interruption of input of signal lights other than the signal light 5 with the particular wavelength and shuts down the transmission. When the fault is recovered, the terminal station 3 detects release of the input interruption of the signal light 5 with the particular wavelength to release the shutdown of the transmission.
