Plotting a characteristic curve (22) for the an electric drive (12) of spot welding tongs (10) comprises closing the spot welding tongs with the simultaneous introduction of a force measuring device (18) via the electrode caps, alteration of the tong closing force within a given region by altering the drive energy, determination of the tong closing force, transmission of the data to evaluation device (20), and plotting of the curve from the data obtained.
