PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high purity iron, in a technique for producing iron from iron carbide. SOLUTION: Reaction furnaces are constituted of two furnaces, and iron carbide and steam are supplied and reacted in a first reaction furnace 14, and flammable gas containing hydrogen and CO is generated and also, at least a part of the iron carbide is transformed into iron and iron oxide. The iron and the iron oxide produced in the first reaction furnace 14 together with the non-reacted iron carbide, are supplied into a second reaction furnace 16, and iron is produced by reacting the iron carbide and the iron oxide and also, the flammable gas containing CO and CO<SB>2</SB>, is generated and the high purity iron is obtained from the second reaction furnace 16.
