A pedal system for a bicycle, e.g. for competitive riding, has an improved grip system for connecting to the plate under the cycling shoe. The pedal has a spring loaded sliding stop (50) with an elastic friction grip top (51) to press under the shoe plate as the profiled front of the plate is positioned under a front stop (31) of the pedal using a tilting action. The rear of the shoe plate locks into a spring loaded rear clamp system (60). The system is independent of wear on the shoe plate and ensures a secure grip with improved pedal action.
