[Also in Groups XXII and XXVIII] In a method of joining the ends 1 of a bead wire for a pneumatic tyre comprising the steps of forming a thread 2 or a plurality of grooves or indentations at the two ends 1 of the wire and positioning a sleeve 3 over the abutting ends of the wire, the sleeve 3 is closed on to the wire ends 1 by cold swaging. Prior to the cold working process the threaded portions have a length of about 2-4 wire diameters and the sleeve a length of 4-10 diameters; the colddrawn steel sleeve 3 has internally tapered or rounded ends. |
