PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make lighting to a liquid crystal panel etc., uniform and high in luminance without causing loss of the quantity of light nor a decrease in polarization efficiency. SOLUTION: A surface light source consisting of a couple of luminous flux 14a of S-polarized light S transmitted through a polarized light separating element 7 and luminous flux L14b of S-polarized light S' which is reflected by a polarized light separating film 5a of a polarized light separating element 5, passing through a total reflecting prism 6, and converted by a polarized light converting element 7 stuck on a projection surface of the total reflecting prism is in a rectangular shape. Those two polarized light beams L14a and L14b are mixed together by a convex lens 8 as a condenser lens and an integrator rod 9 into homogeneous polarized light, which is projected from the integrator 9 to irradiate a liquid crystal light valve A through a light converging convex lens 10 in a specified screen size.
