A pneumatic press system has a vertical press cylinder (2) with a vertically moving pneumatic piston (3). The invention describes a liquid layer (6) between the piston and the workpiece to prevent thermal damage from the compressed gasses. The size of the liquid cushion is selected to ensure that the piston is still coated with liquid at TDC. The liquid can be water, oil or emulsion and is supplied from a reservoir (7) by a pumping system. A set amount of liquid is returned to the reservoir after each press operation. The liquid cushion is fitted with a sieve to prevent turbulence.
