PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation membrane module which is formed by connecting a plurality of spiral membrane elements and in which the turbid matter clogged in a flow passage of raw water in each of the elements can be removed satisfactorily, and to provide a separation membrane apparatus and a method for operating the separation membrane apparatus. SOLUTION: The separation membrane module is provided with a plurality of the spiral membrane elements 201a-201c each of which is formed by winding a cap-shaped separation membrane around the outer peripheral surface of a permeating water collecting pipe 24 together with a raw water spacer, connection parts 11a, 11b for connecting the adjacent ones of the elements 201a-201c to each other in series, a cylindrical vessel 18 in which the elements 201a-201c are loaded, turbid matter discharge holes 16a, 16b formed respectively near the parts 11a, 11b on the outer peripheral surface of the vessel 18 and turbid matter removing pipeline 26a, 26b connected respectively to the holes 16a, 16b.
