PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method for manufacturing a coated steel sheet having an excellent outward appearance. SOLUTION: Support rolls are provided in front and in rear of a position perpendicularly below a coating curtain at an interval in the range of 1,000-3,500 mm. The steel sheet is coated at least at 2.5 kg/mm<SP>2</SP>of the lower-limit tension of the sheet. A continuous coating apparatus for steel sheets is provided with a roller curtain-coater for coating the surface, a roller coater for coating the rear surface, and a catenary drying furnace. In double-side coating of the steel sheet, the interval between the support rolls provided between the roller curtain-coater and the roller coater is set in the range of 1,000-3,500 mm, and the lower-limit tension of the sheet is set at 2.5 kg/mm<SP>2</SP>or higher.
