<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save space by simplifying and reducing the size of constituting elements (such as an image carrier) which are necessary for carrying out both sides transfer by passing paper once. <P>SOLUTION: The perimeter of a third image carrier 100 (a transfer belt) is made equivalent to the maximum size of a recording medium (irreducible minimum). In the maximum size, a toner image to be transferred to one side of the recording medium is transferred to the whole perimeter of the belt from an intermediate transfer belt 10 and carried. An image for the other side of the recording medium is created after the first image, continuously without any spacing, to a second image carrier 10 (the intermediate transfer belt). Immediately after finishing of transfer of one side to the transfer belt 100 (in a continuous action), both sides transfer (one side from the transfer belt 100 and the other side from the intermediate transfer belt 10) is carried out to the recording medium.
