PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of surface coated cemented carbide having a hard coating layer formed thereon, which is excellent in adhesion and wear resistance. SOLUTION: The cutting tool made of surface coated cemented carbide is composed by depositing a hard coating layer of 1-15μm in overall average thickness by vapor deposition on the surface of a base body of tungsten carbide radical cemented carbide, in which an amorphous layer formed by the arc ion plating surface treatment exists in the surface region of the average thickness within 1-50μm from the surface. In the hard coating layer, a maximum Al content point and a minimum Al content point alternately and repeatedly exist at regular intervals along the thickness direction of the the layer. Also, the hard coating layer has such a content distribution structure that the content of Al and Ti continuously vary in the range between both of the maximum Al content point and the minimum Al content point. In addition, the maximum Al content point satisfies the following composition formula: (Al<SB>X</SB>Ti<SB>1-X</SB>)N (where X is 0.70-0.95 in atomic ratio), the minimum Al content point satisfies the following composition formula: (Al<SB>Y</SB>Ti<SB>1-Y</SB>)N (where Y is 0.40-0.65 in atomic ratio), respectively, and the distance between the adjoining two points is 0.01-0.1μm.
