The present invention aims to provide an optical transmitter utilizing an external Mach-Zehnder type optical modulator serially connected to an optical phase modulator. The optical modulator is capable of optimizing an optical wavelength chirp to be added to a transmission optical signal. A Mach-Zehnder optical modulator comprises an input 70a, output 70c and first and second arms 70b1, 70b2. An optical phase modulator receives light from output 70c and transmits the light along waveguide 70e. The optical transmitter also includes amplitude adjusting means 74, phase adjusting means 75, amplitude controlling means 82 and phase controlling means 83. All of which are used to control the drive signal applied to the optical phase modulator.
