Tamper resistant physical documents containing wirelessly read electronic memories

A security document 901 includes a printed document and one or more memory circuits or tags 904. These are read by wireless or other non-contact means. They are attached to the printed document in a tamper resistant region 903. Thus the memory circuit is physically isolated to inhibit tampering or to indicate when tampering has occurred. The memory tag is read by means of a stylus 910 and processor 911. Data read from the tag is downloaded, decrypted and displayed 912. The data may include a signature which may be compared visually with the signature 902 on the document for verification. Data may include an image of the authorised bearer of the security document to permit him to be granted access to an account or asset.
