A rotary heat-engine comprises a rotatable ring 1 (Fig. 1, not shown) carrying a plurality of flexible working chambers 2 which are periodically compressed by rotatable cylindricalabutments 22, 23 and brought into communication with passages or channels 5, 6, 9, 21 in a stationary body 4 through ports or openings 3 as the ring rotates. In operation, atmospheric air is drawn through a channel 21 into a chamber 2 at a position 20 adjacent the abutment 23 and subsequently compressed when the chamber reaches a position 13 adjacent the abutment 22. The compressed air is ejected through the passage 5 and a non-return valve into a heatexchanger 8 whence it enters a combustion chamber 17 to effect combustion of fuel injected through a nozzle 11, the products of combustion being transferred through a passage 6 to a working chamber for expansion therein as it passes between positions 14, 15 against the abutment 22. Exhaust gases are expelled to the atmosphere through the passage 9, heatexchanger 8 and a further passage 10 when each working chamber reaches a position 18 next to the abutment 23. The combustion chamber 17 may be replaced by a further heat-exchanger 81 (Fig. 2, not shown) through which hot gas or liquid is circulated by a pump 24 connected to an external heat-generator 1711, the other heat-exchanger 811 being connected to the passage 211 to form a closed circuit for the working gas. Alternatively, the engine may comprise a single heat-exchanger 8 (Fig. 3, not shown) through which the products of combustion flow from an external combustion-chamber 171 to the atmosphere to heat the working gas as it flows from the passage 5 to the passage 6. Combustion products may be fed to a further engine through a duct or pipe-line 121 Air is supplied to the chamber 171 by a blower 241. A single flat abutment 221 may be constituted by a road surface, the ring 1 and chambers 2 constituting a road-wheel of a vehicle which is propelled thereby. The engines according to Figs. 1 and 2 may be adapted to propel a road vehicle. The abutments 22, 23 may be replaced by flat abutments e.g. discs which are rotatable about a vertical axis.
