Fluorinated and chlorofluorinated methanes and ethanes are prepared by fluorination of chlorinated methanes and ethanes by reaction with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of an antimony halide catalyst which is in the liquid state, the reaction being conducted in a cylindrical reactor tube without the use of any mechanical device for stirring, pumping or mixing the reaction mixture, the volume of the catalyst being sufficient to fill the reactor tube to a height of not less than 5 times the internal diameter of the reactor tube. The reaction may be conducted in the presence of elemental chlorine. |
