PURPOSE: A method for performing a decoding process by coping with picture type loss in a video phone system is provided to compensate for loss of a picture type when the loss is caused according to a packet error environment in a packet-based video phone service system, thereby effectively processing a multimedia bit stream decoding error. CONSTITUTION: A packet is inputted(S401), and the inputted packet is depacketized(S402). A system decides whether a PSC(Picture Start Code) exists(S403). If so, the system decodes a picture type(S404), and performs a general decoding process after setting a processing routine in accordance with the picture type(S405,S406). If the packet is a picture segment packet(S409), the system searches picture type information from the current packet, and uses the searched information for a next decoding process(S410). If the packet is a follow-on packet(S411), the system searches the picture type information from the previous picture segment packet, and performs the decoding process(S412).
