DEVICE FOR IMPROVING CONTRAST OF FLAT PANEL DISPLAY AND REMOVING MOTION RESIDUAL IMAGE AND METHOD THEREFOR

PURPOSE: A device for improving contrast of an FPD(Flat Panel Display) and removing a motion residual image is provided to control contrast for a digital image, and to decide a contrast control range as a variation of a histogram for the image, thereby improving image quality and variably controlling the contrast. CONSTITUTION: A contrast controller(220) applies a weight determined based on a variation of an input image to a current input image and a previous input image, and controls contrast for the current/previous images. A motion blurring compensator(240) compensates for a motion blurring for a pixel difference image between the current image and the previous image. The contrast controller(220) comprises as follows. A sample image obtainer(222) obtains a sample image from the input image. A mean calculator(224) calculates a mean for the sample image. A variation calculator(226) calculates a variation for the sample image. An image brightness determiner determines brightness of the input image. A weight applier(230) controls contrast of the current/previous images.
