Retrieving local near-surface material information using propagator estimation and inversion

A method comprises recording a seismic wavefield from a group of receivers (geophones) including at least one surface receiver and one buried receiver, estimating a propagator and inverting the propagator to determine local near surface material parameters. Computation of wavefield derivatives is avoided and so the method is less sensitive to noise.
