The combustion process involves burning the fuel-air mixture flowing through a flow channel (13) in a first combustion stage in a catalytic converter (15), downstream of which the fuel is mixed with the exhaust from the converter. In a second stage, this mixture is burned, producing a homogeneous flame (17) by self-ignition. The flame is passed through aerodynamic stabilizing devices (16, 19).
