Varnish produced by radical polymerization of a composition comprising 20-99 wt.% of a monomer mixture comprising 0.1-100 wt.% of a fluoroalkyl (alk)acrylate and 0-99 wt.% of a hydrocarbon monomer, 0.2-2 wt.% of a radical initiator and 0-80 wt.% of a solvent is new. Varnish produced by radical polymerization of a composition comprising 20-99 wt.% of a monomer mixture comprising 0.1-100 wt.% of a fluoroalkyl (alk)acrylate (I) and 0-99 wt.% of a hydrocarbon monomer, 0.2-2 wt.% of a radical initiator and 0-80 wt.% of a solvent is new. CH=C(R)-COO(CH2)nRf (I) Rf = 1-22C perfluoroalkyl; R = H or 1-4C alkyl; n = 1-15. An Independent claim is also included for a coating of the varnish on a surface to be protected.
