The method involves determining a counter pressure of an exhaust gas from an exhaust gas pipe (10) of an engine (1). A curve of the counter pressure of the exhaust gas or average value of the counter pressure is determined based on an average pressure on a level of an exhaust valve (15) for the engine operating cycle, average downstream pressure of a friction charge unit (5) for the cycle, and an engine speed.
