PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an excessive rise of the surface temperature of the middle portion of a fixing roller beyond a set temperature when shifted from a standby state to an operation state, in an image forming apparatus which includes a means for detecting the surface temperature of the fixing roller in a paper non-passage area and incorporates a heating element for mainly heating the middle portion of the fixing roller and heating elements for mainly heating both ends of the fixing roller. SOLUTION: When an image forming apparatus is shifted from the standby state in which the set temperature of the fixing roller 61 is lower than fixing temperature to the operation state in which fixing is performed using only the middle portion of the fixing roller 61, power is supplied to a main heater H<SB>1</SB>and a sub-heater H<SB>2</SB>for a predetermined period of time from the start of the operation, thereby heating the fixing roller 61.
