PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of igniting sparks at an optimal time. SOLUTION: This pre-mixed compression ignition internal combustion engine 1 comprises: at least two ion current detection means 3 and 9 arranged on an outer peripheral side and a center side in a cylinder 2 of the internal combustion engine 1; and an air-fuel mixture concentration control means 8 for changing a concentration distribution of an air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder 2 such that a generating time of ion current detected by the ion current detection means 3 and 9 is a predetermined time with respect to the respective ion current detection means 3 and 9.
