To form a catalyst, a housing mantle (1) is formed by a wound sheet (2). A solid body (6), with a wound mounting mat (7), is inserted into the housing. Clamping strips are secured around the housing mantle to give the final shape. During clamping, the gap (A) between the solid body and the housing mantle is monitored, and clamping is stopped when there is a minimal gap between the mat and the housing.
