<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup capable of promptly performing switching of light utilizing efficiency of a laser diode by a simple means and to provide an optical disk reproducing apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The optical pickup 1 in the optical disk reproducing apparatus can perform operations of a low power operation mode and a high power operation mode and is provided with a liquid crystal element 13 and a polarization beam splitter 16 for attenuating a laser beam emitted from a laser diode 11 to an optical disk 10 only when operation of the low power operation mode is performed. The liquid crystal element 13 attenuates a polarization component to be irradiation light to the optical disk 10 together with working of the polarization beam splitter 16 by being turned on only when operation of the low power operation mode is performed to function as a rotary polarization element. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
