PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the layered lanthanum oxide which is a novel substance, its preparation process, a lanthanum oxide intercalation compound which is a novel substance and a gas adsorbent comprising the layered lanthanum oxide. SOLUTION: The layered lanthanum oxide contains lanthanum oxide having different diffraction patterns respectively at least in 3-15°, 7-35°and 20-50°in X-ray diffraction. The layered lanthanum oxide is prepared by baking a lanthanum oxide gel, prepared through a sol-gel method, at 100-500°C. The lanthanum oxide intercalation compound contains a specific metal, etc., between the layers of the layered lanthanum oxide. The layered lanthanum oxide can intercalate various compounds between its layers and especially absorbs gases, enabling its use as the gas adsorbent. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
