PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for compressing image data useful in facsimile, digital print, scan and copy systems. SOLUTION: In an image data processing system of a digital copier or a scanner, a compression ratio and a compression time resulting from applying a compression algorithm to an image data set are predicted. When it is determined that the predicted compression ratio or compression time is not preferable, the system is notified not to apply the compression algorithm. The method is used to select a type of the compression algorithm such as CCITT G4 or JBI G2 in response to the requirement of a larger system. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
