PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the printing speed of a printer by shortening the moving distance of a carriage at the time of a high speed printing mode. SOLUTION: For this two-way recording method, a first recording head array which is arranged such as K, C, M and Y, and a second recording head array which is arranged such as Y, M, C and K are provided. A mask pattern for performing printing by only the first recording head array, and a mask pattern for performing recording by only the second recording head string are switched depending on the location of a carriage unit which carries recording heads.
