Manufacture of diffractive optical device, by applying magnetic field to curable magnetic liquid layer, and maintaining until layer achieves required dimensional stability

A first layer (5) of a curable magnetic liquid is applied and subjected to a magnetic field with a field distribution corresponding to a predetermined permanent diffraction structure, before being hardened. The magnetic field is maintained until the layer (5) achieves a dimensional stability that is sufficient to maintain the diffraction structure. Independent claims are included an optical component, and for an apparatus for manufacturing a diffractive optical component.
