The signal sampling adapting method uses sampling of the lambda signal (28) at defined time points (30) for providing exhaust gas lambda values for the individual engine cylinders, the lambda values for a number of cylinders used for determination of a characteristic indicating the disparity between the lambda values for individual cylinders, the sampling time points for the individual cylinders adjusted relative to the crankshaft angles for obtaining extreme values of the characteristic.
