PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a particulate filter from exceeding its allowable temperature in performing regeneration when a particulate deposit amount is estimated as being smaller than an actual amount due to variations or the like.

SOLUTION: If a temperature rise allowance of the particulate filter per unit hour is larger than a prescribed value in performing regeneration, the particulate filter is determined as exceeding its allowable temperature soon, and the temperature rise allowanceΔTexh of exhaust emission gas is decreased (ΔTexh1: temperature rise allowance in the ordinary case). At this time, the temperature rise allowance of exhaust emission gas is more significantly decreased as the temperature rise allowance becomes larger.
