PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the release timing lag so as to eliminate a shortcoming such that a shutter chance is missed and also to realize accurate autofocus when instantaneous photographing property is not required. SOLUTION: The CPU 15 of an imaging apparatus performs control to detect a focusing position from an image signal photoelectrically converted by a CCD 5 while driving a focus lens group 3 adjusting the focus of a subject image formed on the CCD 5, and also performs focusing by selecting any function in accordance with a designation signal concerning photography out of scanning AF function to control the focus lens group 3 based on the result of the detection of the focusing position and an active AF function to control the focus lens group 3 based on an output signal from an active AF means 30 radiating light to a subject and generating the output signal in accordance with a distance to the subject based on reflected light from the subject.
